Tire temperatures in one corner. What can you learn?

We’re beginning this series of short posts to showcase how quickly useful tire (and brake, in the future) temperature data can be gathered and used to improve your race car. The picture is taken from the telemetry of a Porsche Cup car that belongs to one of our customers.

Rear right tire showing lower outside temps under braking. This would normally suggest too much camber, but you can see the temps almost match mid-corner. This suggests we’re getting the maximum from the tires when it counts most. Then, during acceleration, you can see the outside temperature dropping again. The most interesting aspect about this shot is that, if you were to use a standard pyrometer to check the temperature in the pits, you’d see the outside being cold, but you’d have no way of knowing if the tire was getting maximum grip while cornering or not.

Our customer used the ALS Tire Wired to gather this data. It was the right choice for multiple test sessions on a single car due to the lower price point (250 EUR/corner). The ALS Tire Pro , our game-changing wireless tire temperature monitoring system can be had for less than 500 EUR / corner and can also be rented for test sessions. It can be installed and removed within minutes, which makes it ideal as a workhorse for teams with multiple cars, during intense test sessions. While one car is having its setup changed, you can move it quickly to the other car and keep gathering data.
